Baldur's Gate 3 VFX Study: Ping Effect

General / 01 July 2026

There is more to this little effect study of the Baldur's Gate 3 Ping effect than meets the eye! The effect consists of some Decal- and Mesh particles, that are overlayed by a Chromatic Aberration Filter. The first challenge I had to master is making sure the effect size correlated with the size of the mesh. This was not only important for the Niagara-effect, but also for the scrolling Band-Material that highlights the selected mesh.

Chromatic Filter Material:

For this effect, I controlled a lot of the Parameters inside the Blueprint. I sampled the Normal-Texture of the input-mesh, and fed it into the Band-Material, so my Overlay-effect had that little extra detail, which added a lot to the look. I also got to play a lot with the Chromatic Aberration, which is always fun. I took some valuable lessons out of doing this effect!
